Harry’s Thoughts on the Judith Weir Workshop
“
The Judith Weir workshop session was very informative! I enjoyed listening to the pieces, and it was a great opportunity to take inspiration for future compositions of my own. Judith not only talked about her history as a composer, but also had some of her pieces played by one of the tutoring musicians at the Summer School! From the performances and talks, I learnt that a good composition does not need multiple parts; a solo voice can make for a fantastic performance.
Weir evidenced this by showing us a YouTube video of her first Opera Song composition, ‘King Harald’s Saga’ (which you can see here). I was slightly disappointed that we were only shown a recording and didn’t receive a performance of the piece, simply because it’s such an interesting piece! I would have preferred to have heard it live.
