I am writing a clarinet piece as part of my work in the world music composition group. For the basis of the piece, the entire group passed around a melody that I started, and each student added to it to create a full piece. I found this really interesting as the end product reflected the different composition styles of the other students. I learned some new techniques from the other students, but it was also interesting to see how other people’s styled varied from mine and how their approaches differed. Our tutor, the clarinetist, then helped us to tailor the pieces to his instrument, so I learned new things about musical capabilities of the clarinet as well.
